Power of Pride completed its first year of action!
The aim of Power of Pride is to ensure LGBTI+ individuals can participate in society to their full potential. This aim is closely linked to our vision of working with local organisations. Community-based LGBTI+ organisations play a central role within our programme as enablers and agents of change.
In line with the Strengthening Civil Society policy of the Dutch MoFA, we work inside-out by supporting LGBTI+ organisations to bring about change within their communities while prioritising their knowledge over the local context. We acknowledge that due to their diverse and contextually-nuanced lived experiences, we cannot prescribe what is needed to improve the livelihoods of the communities we support. Thus, we are gradually shifting the decision-making power into their hands.
We implement a participatory grantmaking approach where, through accountable procedures, activists decide on a national level how the Programme’s funds will be distributed across its priorities and what activities will be implemented in their country.
And it works!
The following infographic is a preliminary presentation of our first year’s inspiring and motivating results!
In 2021, across the 22 countries of the Programme, our 95 partner organisations implemented 182 initiatives to support LGBTI+ individuals in accepting themselves and knowing their rights, created 91 safer spaces for LGBTI+ communities, built the capacity of 95 CBOs, produced 40 statements and shadow reports on LGBTI+ issues and gender-inclusive development, mobilised allies through 141 initiatives over 95 thematics, and created 19 alliances to strengthen their advocacy and promote structural change.
In the coming newsletters, we will dive into examples of our partners’ work in the different priorities of the Programme.
